The University of Kentucky
Facing a critical need for modern student housing and a large deferred maintenance tab for renovation of their existing residence halls, the University of Kentucky engaged in the largest P3 rehabilitation of student housing in the United States. From 2012 to 2017 over 14 residence halls comprising 6,850 beds were constructed on campus, comprising a variety of suite-style and apartment formats for freshman to upper class and graduate students. An investment of $459M created a completely fresh and architecturally harmonious campus atmosphere and encouraged record applications and enrollment at the University of Kentucky
The project’s 14 residence halls comprised different but compatible exterior features and included classrooms, study rooms, kitchens, gathering spaces and connectivity that was missing from the older residence halls that were demolished to make way for the new program. The resulting award-winning developments not only attracted students to the University, but as a result improved UK’s credit with financial rating agencies. Increased interest in UK also meant higher GPA’s from applicants, and greater student retention, improving the financial bottom line.
“In a few short years we replaced and expanded our on-campus housing by constructing 14 new student housing buildings with a total spend of approximately $450 million. Mark was instrumental in the process from site selection, contract negotiations, design, and construction. I found him to be very professional, knowledgeable, creative, and pleasant to work with throughout the entire process.”
